The University of New Mexico (UNM) is set to launch its 28th annual UNM Gives campaign in partnership with the United Way of North Central New Mexico (UWNCNM), beginning October 1 and running through November 30. The campaign aims to support programs that address health, financial stability, education, and basic needs for residents across Bernalillo, Torrance, Valencia, Santa Fe, and Sandoval counties.

Last year’s campaign raised over $197,000 from more than 300 donors. This year marks a shift in focus toward student involvement. According to the university, “While faculty and staff have traditionally led the effort, this year puts students front and center. Student leadership and voices will drive visibility, engagement, and the spirit of giving in new and creative ways.”

The campaign’s theme is “United is the Way Forward.” A student team will coordinate peer-to-peer outreach and organize campus activities to boost participation. The students are leading initiatives such as interactive booths to raise awareness and promote Lobo Paws—a symbolic $1 ticket representing contributions—to encourage involvement rather than direct donations from students.

Signature events include the Salsa Showdown on October 16 at the SUB Atrium and Smith Plaza. Faculty, staff, and students will compete with salsa recipes for prizes like a year of free parking provided by UNM Parking & Transportation Services. Recipes must be submitted by October 1 at 5 p.m., after which they will be prepared by UNM Food services. The event also features outdoor booths run by student organizations where participants can purchase Lobo Paws to play games or support causes.

Another event is Change for Change—a four-week competition among departments to collect donations through loose change until October 31. The top two departments will receive pizza deliveries from Saggios by University President Garnett Stokes along with a trophy for their office.

Donors are automatically entered into bi-weekly prize drawings throughout the campaign period. Prizes include tickets to local sporting events such as New Mexico United soccer games and Isotopes baseball games; entry to the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta; gift cards; coffee packs; and merchandise from Mariachis de Nuevo Mexico.

Contributions can be directed toward any nonprofit organization or specific United Way initiatives including the Women’s Resource Center, Animal Humane New Mexico, the 211 Helpline, Family Advocacy Center, Free Tax Prep for low-income households, ABQ Career Connect for middle school students, or Bienvenidos—a program offering hydroponic grow towers and food cultivation training for housed or low-income clients.

“As a university, this campaign and partnership with United Way reflects our commitment and dedication to leadership and service in our community,” according to organizers.
