The University of New Mexico (UNM) has started a feasibility and development planning study aimed at modernizing University Stadium and transforming South Campus into a mixed-use economic development district. The study will create a long-term vision and action plan to improve the stadium while exploring ways to benefit students, fans, and the wider community.

The initial phase of planning is supported by state capital outlay funding authorized by Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham. UNM selected Dekker, a New Mexico-based architecture firm with experience in campus projects, along with Gensler, an international design firm known for its work on sports venues such as Snapdragon Stadium at San Diego State University and facilities at UCLA and the University of Texas at Austin.

“At UNM, we are committed to creating facilities that inspire pride, bring people together, and serve the needs of our state,” said University of New Mexico President Garnett S. Stokes. “This study is an important step toward reimagining University Stadium as a modern, multipurpose venue, while also positioning South Campus as a center of student life, athletics, and economic development that benefits Albuquerque and all of New Mexico.”

Vice President and Director of Athletics Fernando Lovo added: “This is a pivotal moment for Lobo Athletics as we work to modernize University Stadium to create a ‘Stadium of the Future’ and align it with the needs of today’s college athletics. Our goal is to create a venue that is both highly competitive and a welcoming gateway that connects South Campus, our student body, and the city of Albuquerque.”

He continued: “We envision University Stadium as a true community hub—not just for seven football games a year, but for year-round events that bring people together from across New Mexico. We are deeply grateful for the support of Governor Lujan Grisham and the state legislature in making this initial planning phase possible.”

The study will review current stadium conditions including structural systems, mechanical elements, accessibility features, circulation patterns, and utilities. It will also focus on improving fan experience through enhanced amenities such as concessions and restrooms. The plan includes designs to make the stadium suitable for concerts, community gatherings, high school championships, and other statewide events throughout the year.

Other aspects involve construction estimates with phased improvement options; analysis for mixed-use growth within South Campus; improvements in parking access; connectivity across campus; stakeholder engagement with students, faculty staff members; financial modeling; phasing recommendations; implementation planning.

“While University Stadium is central to this study, our vision extends beyond the stands,” said UNM Vice President for Institutional Services Shawna Wolfe. “We see South Campus as an opportunity to weave athletics, student life, civic engagement, and University growth in a cohesive way.”

UNM expects completion of the study within six to twelve months with preliminary findings available in early 2026. The resulting plan aims to guide future investments in facilities while strengthening ties between athletics programs university community members local residents alike.

Dekker brings decades-long expertise working on UNM campuses while Gensler contributes global perspective from designing major sports venues worldwide.
