The University of New Mexico College of Education & Human Sciences (COEHS) will hold its annual Lobos @ APS Day on October 23. The event is intended to strengthen the relationship between UNM and Albuquerque Public Schools (APS).
During the day, UNM faculty, staff, and administrators will spend time in APS classrooms and with various education professionals such as teachers, counselors, athletic trainers, and nutrition staff. The goal is to provide university participants with a better understanding of daily life within Albuquerque’s public schools.
“APS is not only New Mexico’s largest school district, it’s also where many of our graduates go on to teach, lead, and serve,” said Kristopher Goodrich, dean of the College of Education & Human Sciences. “Lobos @ APS Day gives our faculty and staff the opportunity to step inside classrooms and schools, learn from our partners, and strengthen the connections that guide our mission: preparing educators who serve New Mexico communities.”
Participants are encouraged to visit APS sites on October 23 but can make alternative arrangements if needed. Activities during partner visits include observing classroom instruction and meeting with school leaders. These visits are designed to highlight how community partnerships contribute to student success.
Through direct engagement with APS schools, COEHS seeks to improve teacher preparation programs and increase support for student teachers while aligning more closely with workforce needs in New Mexico.
At the end of the day, all participants from both UNM and APS will meet at the Berna Facio Professional Development Center for a reception and group reflection session. The discussions held there are expected to continue within UNM departments for further program-specific evaluation.
