The University of New Mexico (UNM) is preparing to host its annual Hanging of the Greens event on Friday, December 5, starting at 5:30 p.m. The tradition, which began in the 1930s, brings together students, families, and alumni for an evening that features thousands of luminarias lighting up the campus.
Participants can begin the festivities with hot chocolate and biscochitos before joining Santa and Mrs. Claus, Lobo Louie and Lucy, and a group of elves for caroling across campus. The procession will lead to University House where a holiday wreath will be presented to UNM President Garnett Stokes.
As attendees walk through campus, they will see luminarias lining sidewalks, courtyards, and historic buildings. After the wreath presentation at University House, carolers will continue to Hodgin Hall Alumni Center for the President’s Posole Reception from 6:30 to 8 p.m. This reception is free and open to all community members.
Guests are encouraged to bring unwrapped children’s books to place under the tree at Hodgin Hall; these donations will go to young patients at UNM Children’s Hospital.
The Hanging of the Greens was established by Lena C. Clauve, a former student and dean of women at UNM. Originally involving students gathering greenery from the Sandia Mountains for decorations in what is now the Student Union Building, it has grown into one of UNM’s signature winter events.
On December 5 as well, UNM Bookstores will hold its annual holiday sale featuring discounts on selected items such as holiday-themed Lobo apparel and gifts, regularly-priced clothing and gifts, Hydro Flask products, cards, gift wrap, toys and books. Live performances are scheduled at Central Campus Bookstore: Something Major from noon to 1 p.m., followed by New Mexico Women’s Chorus from 5 to 6 p.m. Shoppers can also access complimentary gift-wrapping services along with free treats.
At 6 p.m., members of the university community will gather outside Central Campus Bookstore for the official start of Hanging of the Greens.
