The University of New Mexico (UNM) University Libraries has opened the application period for its third annual Open Educational Resources (OER) Grant Program. The program aims to support faculty, instructors, and graduate students in using OER to improve student learning outcomes.

These grants are available for those interested in adopting, adapting, or creating open educational materials. The initiative is designed to help applicants either use existing open resources, modify them for their courses, or develop new content. Applications will be accepted until October 1, 2025.

During the 2024–2025 academic year, UNM’s OER initiative resulted in student savings of $383,980 on textbook costs. Projections indicate that these savings could increase to $570,446 for the 2025-2026 academic year. This reduction in expenses helps students manage their finances and may contribute to higher retention and success rates.

“Creating and adapting OER takes time and expertise, but the rewards can be transformative for students and teachers alike,” a statement from the university reads.

To assist potential applicants, three informational sessions are scheduled:
– Wednesday, August 27, 2025 at 1 p.m.
– Thursday, September 11, 2025 at 1 p.m.
– Wednesday, September 24, 2025 at 10 a.m.

At these sessions participants can learn about the application process and explore research methods related to OER. Those unable to attend can find more information through a dedicated library guide with details and an application link (https://libguides.unm.edu/oer/grant), contact the OER librarian by email at oer@unm.edu for appointments, or view a YouTube playlist offering guidance on finding open content and teaching with open pedagogy (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLbQ2A9hZx9UeXbIXfLwJYHBrVv3AWW8g7).

Projects funded by this grant should begin in spring or summer of 2026.
