The University of New Mexico’s Asian American and Pacific Islander Resource Center (AAPIRC) is marking the opening of its new location with a grand opening celebration and its annual welcome back lu’au. The event is scheduled for Wednesday, September 3, from noon to 2 p.m. on the north side of Cornell Mall, near the fountain.

The center’s move to Mesa Vista Hall, Room 1064, provides a dedicated space intended to support the AAPI community at UNM as students, staff, and faculty return for the academic year.

“This grand opening is a historic moment for the Asian American Pacific Islander Resource Center, as it marks the beginning of our new space and the foundation we are building for the AAPI community at UNM,” said Aaron Tuitoni-Mariner, AAPIRC’s program manager.

“The Lu’au is a traditional Pacific Islander welcome celebration, and it reflects the spirit of the center. This event will honor our cultures while creating an open and welcoming space where everyone on campus feels invited and represented.”

Opening remarks will be delivered by President Stokes, Eric Scott, Ph.D., Vice President of Student Affairs, and Pamela Agoyo, acting director of AAPIRC. Entertainment following these comments will feature performances by both campus groups and local organizations.

Cultural performances are set to include presentations from the Indian student organization as well as Albuquerque’s Ka La Kapu Polynesian Dance group. Food service will be provided by L&L Hawaiian BBQ.

Admission to this event is free but requires tickets for entry. Tickets can be picked up in advance at AAPIRC offices; attendees must bring their Lobo ID card.

Further details about the event can be found on AAPIRC’s website.
