Bernalillo County has announced the winner of its 2025 Sugar Skull Fun Run logo contest. Nuci Vue, a senior at La Cueva High School, was selected as the student artist whose design will represent this year’s event.
Vue’s artwork includes five sugar-skull skeletons, two alebrije dogs, and a roadrunner alebrije. The figures symbolize community and reflect the traditions of Día de los Muertos. In her design, one skeleton wears the number 11 for November, two children are marked with numbers one and two for the days of the holiday, and another figure represents La Catrina in a stylized Mexican dress. Vue received a cash prize for her work, which inspired the current roadrunner logo used by Bernalillo County for this year’s run.
“I wanted to include people of all ages to illustrate an idea of community, and also to present that anyone of any age could participate and have fun in this run,” said Vue.
The Sugar Skull Fun Run is scheduled for Sunday, October 26, 2025. Early bird registration ends on September 19. Details about registration, participation, pricing, and discounts can be found at www.BernCo.gov/SSFR.
The annual event celebrates Día de los Muertos traditions while raising money for Bernalillo County’s Quality of Life Fund. Participants can take part in a 5K run or walk, a one-mile strut-and-stroll, enjoy food trucks, and visit the Muerto Market featuring local vendors.
Recently in Bernalillo County news unrelated to the event: The District Attorney has expressed frustration over suspects violating GPS monitor rules after being released pretrial. In one case reported by KRQE, Jawid Yaqubi was accused of aggravated assault but was released by a judge despite objections from prosecutors.
