The City of Albuquerque has reaffirmed its commitment to being an immigrant-friendly city amid concerns over recent federal immigration orders. Mayor Tim Keller and the City's Office of Immigrant and Refugee Affairs have assured residents that Albuquerque will continue to appreciate and celebrate its immigrant community.
According to city law, employees, including police officers, are prohibited from inquiring about or documenting individuals' immigration status. Mayor Keller stated, "We believe everyone in our city should be able to report crimes and take their kids to school, church, or the hospital without fear of having their family torn apart. APD officers will continue to arrest violent and repeat offenders–regardless of immigration status. We won’t turn our local police into immigration agents or target people because of their status or skin color."
For those facing challenges or with questions about their rights, resources are available through the Office of Immigrant and Refugee Affairs (OIRA). The office provides information online and connects individuals with local organizations for assistance. Beatriz Valencia serves as the OIRA Liaison for the City, regularly convening a steering committee with representatives from various community-based organizations serving immigrants and refugees.
Mayor Keller and Beatriz Valencia have also shared a bilingual message with the community through a recorded video available online and on social media (@mayorkeller), reiterating support for immigrants and sharing resources.
Mayor Keller expressed his gratitude towards local advocates, faith communities, and organizations working to protect immigrants during these challenging times. "Let’s keep looking out for each other and caring for one another in the One Albuquerque spirit," said Mayor Keller.
