Bernalillo County, N.M. – Bernalillo County Board of Commissioners Chair Eric Olivas outlined the county's legislative priorities for Animal Care Services during a news conference today.
The county is seeking $1 million in capital outlay funding for 2025 to expand the Animal Care and Resource Center located at 3001 Second St. SW. This expansion aims to address the increasing animal population at the shelter.
Plans for the expansion include adding at least 8,000 square feet with indoor-outdoor dog housing and runs. Existing spaces will be renovated to meet modern standards and improve operational efficiency. The total estimated cost for this project is $13.1 million, with $305,000 already committed, accounting for 2% of the required funds.
“We are extremely grateful to our lawmakers for getting us started on the funding needed for this project, but this is just the beginning,” stated Board of County Commissioners Chair Eric Olivas. “Animal intake has surged since the facility opened in 2019 and further resources are needed to accommodate the growing needs of the community.”
Chair Olivas also expressed his support for several bills related to these initiatives.
