Gabrielle Domingo Kashuba is set to graduate this fall with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from The University of New Mexico College of Nursing. Kashuba, originally from the Philippines, moved to the United States about a decade ago seeking better educational opportunities. She completed her degree through an online RN to BSN program tailored for working nurses.

Kashuba's passion for nursing began in childhood, inspired by images of nurses on television. "I always knew I wanted to be a nurse, even before I could write," she stated. Her understanding of the profession deepened during her time in nursing school and as she gained practical experience.

After six months as a registered nurse, Kashuba began precepting new graduate nurses and others joining her unit. "I love teaching," she said. "Whether it's a student, a new nurse, or a patient, I enjoy helping others learn."

Balancing long shifts with online coursework was challenging for Kashuba. Nevertheless, with family and faculty support, she persevered due to her passion for nursing and desire to expand her knowledge and skills. "A BSN allows you to do so much more," she remarked.

Looking ahead, Kashuba hopes to pursue a master's degree in forensic nursing but remains focused on excelling in bedside nursing for now. "There's always something new in nursing," she commented.

Kashuba faced personal hardships during her studies; notably, losing her grandmother before graduation. "My grandma was so proud of me," she shared.

As graduation approaches, Kashuba feels immense pride in herself and gratitude towards those who supported her journey. "I'm proud of myself," she expressed.

Her story exemplifies resilience and determination and serves as inspiration for others pursuing their dreams despite challenges. She advises: "When times get tough... take a step back... then get back to work."

For nurses seeking career advancement, The University of New Mexico College of Nursing offers an RN to BSN program designed to facilitate professional growth.
