The Animal Welfare Department is encouraging the community to contribute to Operation Silent Night, a drive aimed at providing comfort gifts for animals residing in city shelters. The department has released a wish list that includes various items for cats and dogs, such as toys, treats, beds, and blankets.

Carolyn Ortega, Director of the Animal Welfare Department, emphasized the importance of these donations: “Donating comfort gifts will help keep our shelter pets from developing depression, loneliness or boredom as they await adoption.” She expressed gratitude towards contributors for brightening the holidays for shelter animals.

Mayor Tim Keller also encouraged participation: “This is an opportunity for each of us to make a positive impact on a shelter pet’s life,” he said. He urged residents to choose this season to create happiness and comfort by donating items from the wish list.

Donations are being accepted until December 31. They can be dropped off at designated Animal Welfare Department shelters or participating local businesses throughout the city. The public can also order items through the Amazon Wish List dedicated to Albuquerque Shelter Animals.

Several locations have been identified for drop-offs:

- Clarks Pet Emporium on Lomas Blvd. NE and Menaul Blvd. NE

- Petco stores on Lomas Blvd. NE and Old Airport Rd. NW

- Boofy's Best for Pets on Golf Course Rd. NW and Cutler Ave NE

- Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity at UNM campus

- PetSmart on Eubank Blvd. NE

- Manzano Animal Clinic on Juan Tabo Blvd. NE

Shelters accepting donations include Eastside Shelter on Lomas Blvd. NE, Westside Shelter on Sunset Gardens SW, and Lucky Paws.
