Voters in New Mexico have approved several measures in the recent general election, providing significant funding and support for various state projects. GO Bond 3, a $230 million bond, received approval from 66 percent of voters. This bond will fund over 40 projects at colleges, universities, and specialty schools across New Mexico. It is expected to create more than 2,300 jobs in fields such as architecture, construction, and education.
The University of New Mexico (UNM) will benefit significantly from this bond. UNM President Garnett S. Stokes expressed gratitude for the support: “The approval of these general obligation bonds will have a transformative effect on our institution and on our state.” Donald Godwin, dean of the UNM College of Pharmacy, highlighted the importance of these funds for educational opportunities in pharmacy.
In addition to GO Bond 3, the Capital Projects GO Bond Act was passed with 67 percent approval. This act will allocate approximately $19 million for public libraries throughout New Mexico. It includes funding for higher education libraries and other library resource acquisitions.
Bernalillo County voters also supported the continuance of a mill levy for UNM Hospital by a solid margin. Kate Becker, CEO of UNM Hospital, emphasized the community's trust: “Support for our hospital is a direct investment into the health and well-being of our community.”
Furthermore, Constitutional Amendment 3 was passed. This amendment allows changes to Article 6, Section 35 of the Constitution of New Mexico concerning judicial nominations. Camille Carey, Dean of UNM School of Law, stated that this change enhances their ability to contribute effectively to the judicial selection process.
