Flu season is approaching, prompting the University of New Mexico Health System to host several free community flu shot clinics across the Albuquerque metro area.

Meghan Brett, MD, an infectious diseases doctor and epidemiologist for UNM Hospital, emphasized the importance of getting a flu vaccine annually. "The flu virus keeps changing," Brett stated. "This year’s flu is different from last year. Also, the flu vaccine only lasts through one season. So, it's important to get vaccinated every year. It's recommended that you get vaccinated in September or October because that will last you through flu season."

Brett noted that the flu impacts individuals differently and can be life-threatening for some. "Some people may feel crummy for seven days, but other people have much more serious effects from flu," she said. "That could include hospitalization, being on a breathing machine and even death. It's very important that people get vaccinated, particularly those who have underlying health conditions."

The first of eight UNM Health clinics will begin in October with no documentation or payment required to receive a shot. Half of these clinics will be drive-thru to simplify the process further. Brett mentioned that the flu vaccine is recommended for anyone six months or older.

UNM Health clarified that COVID vaccines would not be distributed at these clinics and advised contacting primary care providers or local pharmacies for COVID vaccinations.

Dates and locations for both primary care in-clinic and drive-thru flu shot clinics are available online. Community members are encouraged to share this information widely.
