As heavy rains and flash flood warnings persist in Northern New Mexico, the New Mexico National Guard has requested sandbags to prepare for the storms. This evening, the City of Albuquerque's Office of Emergency Management (OEM) dispatched 12,500 sandbags to support emergency responders in the affected area. The OEM-led effort was facilitated by contributions from the Solid Waste Department and Albuquerque Community Safety.

Two years ago, the Calf Canyon/Hermit’s Peak Fires severely impacted Northern New Mexico. The City of Albuquerque joined firefighting efforts, increased resources available to evacuees, and provided emergency shelter for those fleeing the fires. As flash floods now affect the burn scar this summer, the City is extending its support to Las Vegas.

“Our friends and families in Northern New Mexico have experienced so much heartbreak over the last few years, and I want them to know—Albuquerque is here for you,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “Stepping up for our neighbors is what we do in New Mexico, and we will continue to help any way we can.”
