The ABQ BioPark has announced the birth of a critically endangered western lowland gorilla. The baby was born to first-time mother Nia Lewa at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 22. Both mother and baby are reported to be in good health, supported by the entire gorilla troop.

“This is exceptional news for the long-term preservation of this critically endangered species,” said Lynn Tupa, ABQ BioPark zoo manager. “The primate care staff were present and ready to intervene for the health and safety of mom and baby. Luckily, this was unnecessary and Nia Lewa is doing an amazing job as a new mom!”

Staff had spent months training Nia Lewa for motherhood, including how to respond if her baby needed supplemental food or urgent medical care. Training involved using a small plush gorilla to simulate feeding scenarios and weekly ultrasound imaging sessions monitored by veterinarians.

Nia Lewa, aged 21, benefited from observing maternal behaviors within her troop. Samantha the gorilla gave birth to Mashika in August 2022, providing a role model for Nia Lewa.

Mother and baby will have access to their outdoor habitats at the BioPark. Visitors should be prepared for possible intermittent closures of the Ape Walk to ensure privacy and a quiet environment while they bond. The animals also have the option to stay indoors during extreme weather conditions.

Nia Lewa joined the BioPark from Toledo Zoo in 2019 as part of the Species Survival Plan (SSP) recommended by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). The father is Kojo, aged 22, who arrived at the BioPark in early 2021 under similar recommendations.

The sex of the newborn gorilla will likely not be determined for several weeks.

The ABQ BioPark is dedicated to protecting nature and connecting communities with wildlife through its four distinct areas: Aquarium, Botanic Garden, Zoo, and Tingley Beach. It operates under Albuquerque's Department of Arts & Culture and has received accreditation from both AZA and American Public Gardens Association. In 2023, it earned recognition from American Humane Certified™ for its animal care standards.
