In a crowded room at The University of New Mexico, medical students and their families gathered for Match Day, a significant event for Doctor of Medicine (MD) students. Among them, Ashlyn Black, a Native American student, faced this momentous day not just for herself but also for her community.

Speaking proudly in Navajo, Black shared her heritage, "Shi ei Ashlynn Black yinishye. Kinlichii’nii nishli. Kinyaa’aanii bashishchiin. Tachii’nii dashicheii. Kinlichii’nii dashinali." She explained her clans, highlighting her roots and identity within the Navajo Nation.

Black's journey to becoming a doctor was filled with challenges, but her upbringing and family inspired her to pursue her dream. Reflecting on her struggles and doubts, she emphasized the importance of education and cultural values instilled in her from a young age.

Drawn to medicine by her parents' examples, Black witnessed the impact of healing and support in her community. Despite facing academic obstacles, she persevered, eventually earning a Bachelor of Science in biology from Stanford University before being accepted into UNM's School of Medicine.

At UNM, Black found a supportive environment that valued diversity and addressed healthcare disparities. Through her academic achievements and advocacy for marginalized communities, she discovered her passion for patient care and empowerment.

As she prepares to graduate with an MD, Black's dedication to her community remains unwavering. Her goal is to return home, serving as a hospitalist and primary care provider to make a meaningful difference where her heart truly lies.

On Match Day, Black's dream of returning to Stanford for her residency came true, bringing a mix of joy and nostalgia. While excited for the future, she acknowledges the bittersweet feeling of leaving behind her current environment and loved ones.

Looking ahead, Black envisions a career centered on giving back to her community, guided by her love for her roots and a deep sense of purpose. As she embarks on this next chapter, her commitment to making a positive impact on those around her shines brightly.
