Karina Bolaños, a third-year student at The University of New Mexico, is immersing herself in the ancient legend of La Llorona, a haunting figure deeply rooted in Latin American folklore. Bolaños, majoring in English and Religious Studies, is conducting research to explore the various narratives and backgrounds surrounding the wailing woman.

Bolaños expressed her deep gratitude towards El Puente and its administrators for their unwavering support in her research endeavors, stating, “There are honestly no words to describe how much El Puente and the administrators have helped me. They have consistently pushed and supported me in my undergraduate research endeavors. They have given me the proper skills and foundation to create a well-rounded research project — one that I am super proud of.”

Delving into the story of La Llorona, Bolaños shared her holistic interest in oral stories, particularly focusing on the ecosystem of the legend. She emphasized, “I am really working with this story to discuss the question of ‘Are stories merely just stories?’ I am exploring her stories and history to critically address this question.”

Reflecting on the variations in La Llorona's tale, Bolaños remarked, “It’s been interesting to look at and listen to these variations of her tale and it’s really given me a lot to think about.” She also highlighted the evolving portrayal of La Llorona in different works, noting, “For me, it was interesting to see the duality of studies and art that have been created in hopes of understanding this figure.”

Bolaños expressed her desire to expand her research to encompass more folkloric tales in the future but currently remains focused on La Llorona. She hopes that her research will prompt people to contemplate the significance and meanings behind the stories they tell.

Presenting her research at the recent UNM Undergraduate Research Opportunity Conference, Bolaños discussed her project titled No Llores Llorona: Wandering Toward a Critical Ecosystem of the Wailing Woman. She acknowledged her mentors and family for their support, emphasizing the importance of their encouragement throughout her academic journey.

As a first-generation student from rural Artesia, N.M., Bolaños credited her family as her biggest supporters. She reflected on her decision to attend UNM, stating, “It was easily the best decision I made, as this place has given me so many gifts of communities, memories, and connections.”

Karina Bolaños' dedication to unraveling the mysteries and complexities of La Llorona's legend serves as a testament to the power of storytelling and the profound impact it can have on individuals and communities.
