The ABQ BioPark, in collaboration with Mayor Tim Keller, has released an updated Facility Plan outlining projects scheduled until the end of the funding cycle in 2031. This plan aims to maximize the community's investment for the benefit of animal wellbeing, conservation, and guest experience.

According to BioPark Director Brandon Gibson, "The Facility Plan maximizes our community’s investment to realize the greatest effects on animal wellbeing, conservation and guest experience." The plan prioritizes projects based on criteria such as safety, mission alignment, and overall impact across the BioPark's facilities.

Lynn Tupa, BioPark Zoo manager, highlighted how the Gross Receipts Tax (GRT) funds are enabling the construction of top-notch habitats that exceed traditional zoo animal care standards. Tupa stated, "Guests can already see that animals in Asia have increased their natural behaviors and fully engage with their habitats, which elevates their physical and mental wellbeing."

Matthew Peterson, BioPark Associate Director, emphasized the significance of the GRT from a conservation perspective. Peterson explained, "Projects behind the scenes, like the S.H.A.R.C. and the Mexican gray wolf refuge, will allow the BioPark to care for rare wildlife while also supporting the genetic diversity of local and global populations."

Key projects outlined in the updated Facility Plan include an interactive ambassador animal complex at the Zoo, major entrance renovations at the Zoo and Aquarium/Botanic Garden, a Mexican gray wolf refuge behind the Botanic Garden, and shoreline enhancements at Tingley Beach. These initiatives aim to elevate the level of care and conservation efforts at the BioPark.

The Facility Plan Update coincides with the annual GRT report, which provides a comprehensive overview of completed projects and expenditures for the previous year. More information on the Facility Plan projects can be accessed at www.abqbioparkfacilityplan.com.
