Erinna “Erin” Atkins, a 2009 graduate of The University of New Mexico School of Law, has assumed the role of President of the State Bar of New Mexico, making her the first woman from Southern New Mexico to hold this position. Atkins, who practices law with her father at the Law Office of S. Bert Atkins, specializes in representing children in abuse and neglect cases, as well as handling custody, divorce, and criminal defense cases. She also serves as a special prosecutor for the City of Alamogordo.

Atkins expressed her pride in representing rural areas and emphasized the importance of rural attorneys pursuing leadership roles within the State Bar. She encouraged women to consider entering the legal profession and participating in State Bar service. Reflecting on her journey, Atkins highlighted her gratitude for her legal education at UNM Law, stating, "Law school is hard, but there were so many moments where I recognized what a gift the opportunity to receive a juris doctorate was."

Having been actively involved in the State Bar of New Mexico for nearly a decade, Atkins has garnered recognition for her outstanding service and dedication. She views her current position as an opportunity to advocate for her community and address the challenges faced by individuals seeking legal assistance in rural areas. Atkins also acknowledged the support and mentorship she received from professors during her time at UNM Law, attributing much of her success to their guidance.

As President of the State Bar of New Mexico, Atkins aims to address pressing issues within the legal community, including the ethical use of artificial intelligence and improving access to legal aid for individuals in underserved areas. She expressed her enthusiasm for working alongside talented officers and board members to make a meaningful impact on the legal landscape of New Mexico.

Atkins's journey from student to legal professional to State Bar President is a testament to her dedication to the law and her commitment to serving her community. Her leadership exemplifies the values of integrity, advocacy, and inclusivity within the legal profession.
