The Gateway Center in Albuquerque is moving forward with plans to establish a Medical Sobering service, marking a significant development in the city's efforts to address substance use issues. Health, Housing, and Homelessness Director Gilbert Ramirez emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, "This is the state’s first medical sobering center, and a critical harm reduction resource that our community needs."

Ramirez highlighted the collaborative effort required to bring this service to fruition, involving the City, County, State, and community members. He expressed anticipation for selecting an operator and commencing operations, underscoring the center's role in providing care to inebriated individuals without the need for emergency room services.

AFR Chief Emily Jaramillo echoed the sentiments, stating, "For years our providers at Albuquerque Fire Rescue have discussed the critical need in our systems of care for a Medical Sobering Center." Jaramillo expressed hope for the center's establishment, emphasizing the positive impact it would have on Fire and EMS services and the community at large.

The Gateway Center's Medical Sobering service will offer care and supervision to intoxicated individuals with non-emergency medical needs, aiming to alleviate pressure on hospitals and emergency departments. With a capacity of 50 beds, the center is poised to become a crucial component of Albuquerque's Continuum of Care for substance use, offering a pathway to detox and treatment for thousands of patients annually.

The City is currently inviting non-profit or governmental organizations to submit proposals to operate the sobering center, which is expected to open upon the completion of construction later this year. Proposals are being accepted until April 19, 2024, with detailed information available on the City of Albuquerque's official website.

In addition to the Medical Sobering service, the Gateway Center is already providing overnight shelter and housing navigation services to homeless adults, with plans for further expansion including additional overnight beds and a medical respite facility for patients recovering from illness and injury.
