The Department of Arts & Culture has announced the opening of applications for the position of Albuquerque Poet Laureate, with the selected individual set to hold the title for the term spanning 2024-2026. Elsa Menendez, deputy director of Arts & Culture, emphasized the significance of the role, stating, "This position plays an important role in promoting poetry as a means of artistic and cultural expression and bringing poetry out into communities to support connection within our diverse city."

Menendez encouraged individuals to participate in the selection process by either nominating someone or applying for the position themselves. She highlighted the impact the next Poet Laureate will have on enriching the city's cultural landscape with their creative voice.

Nominees are expected to showcase a deep commitment to poetry and a passion for sharing its transformative potential with the Albuquerque community. The program is coordinated by a five-person Organizing Committee comprised of poets and artists, who work alongside a seven-person Selection Committee representing the breadth of the poetry community in Albuquerque.

Former Albuquerque Poet Laureates include Anna C. Martinez, Mary Oishi, Michelle Otero, Manuel Gonzales, Jessica Helen Lopez, and Hakim Bellamy. The program continues to uphold the tradition of honoring and showcasing the literary talents within the city, fostering a deeper appreciation for the art of poetry.
