A section of Rio Bravo Boulevard SW in Bernalillo County has been reduced to one lane for about three weeks due to ongoing work at the intersection with Second Street. The lane closure, which began today and will continue until December 11, is part of the Rio Bravo and Second Street Intersection Project.
Construction crews are removing and replacing deteriorated concrete at the intersection as part of this phase. According to Bernalillo County officials, this project is one step in a larger effort to reconstruct Rio Bravo Boulevard. The current timeline anticipates completion by May 2026.
In addition to the county’s project, the New Mexico Department of Transportation plans to rebuild the nearby Rio Bravo bridge crossing. This reconstruction will align with the new six-lane configuration being implemented by Bernalillo County. Although both projects are adjacent, they are being managed separately.
Elsewhere in Bernalillo County, criminal justice issues have drawn attention from local officials. The District Attorney has expressed frustration regarding suspects violating GPS monitor requirements and returning to the streets when they should remain under supervision. In a recent case, Jawid Yaqubi was accused of aggravated assault involving firearms against family members in Albuquerque. Despite efforts by the DA’s office to keep him in custody before trial, a judge released him (https://www.krqe.com/news/crime/bernalillo-county-da-frustrated-over-suspects-breaking-ankle-monitor-rules/).
