Rep. Melanie Stansbury, currently serving in the U.S. Congress representing New Mexico’s 1st district, posted a series of tweets on April 8 and 9 addressing issues related to congressional oversight, military casualties, and political leadership.

On April 8, Stansbury commented on actions by the Attorney General’s office regarding a scheduled deposition: “Today, the Attorney General’s office tried to inform the Oversight Committee that Pam Bondi would not appear for her deposition. I don’t think so. I hope she is ready to face contempt. Otherwise, we look forward to seeing you at your deposition. AG or not—those responsible for” (April 8, 2026).

The following day, she highlighted the human and financial costs associated with recent conflicts: “13 service members killed Over 300 with severe injuries Thousands of civilians dead Over a million people displaced Bombs still being dropped And over $40 billion spent And for what? It is time for Trump and Hegseth to go.” (April 9, 2026).

Later that day, Stansbury added a brief comment regarding political communication: “Please, someone take his phone away.” (April 9, 2026).

Melanie Stansbury has represented New Mexico’s 1st District in Congress since replacing Deb Haaland in 2021. She previously served in the New Mexico House of Representatives from 2019 to 2021 and was born in Farmington in 1979 before relocating to Albuquerque. In recent elections, she defeated Steve Jones in the general election of 2024 with approximately 56% of the vote; prior victories include wins over Michelle Garcia Holmes in 2022 and Mark Moores in a special election held in June 2021.
