New Mexico Baseball lost 13-11 to Tarleton State on Friday after surrendering a late eight-run lead. The Lobos led 11-3 heading into the seventh inning but gave up 10 unanswered runs in the final three frames, allowing the Texans to take Game One of the weekend series.
The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, with the first game scheduled for seven innings starting at noon Mountain Time and a nine-inning second game following about 45 minutes later.
Starting pitcher Cristian Mogen delivered a solid performance for New Mexico, pitching 5.2 innings and allowing three earned runs. However, relievers Ty Cunningham and Josh Barnhouse struggled in relief, giving up a combined 10 earned runs as Tarleton State collected 12 hits during their comeback. Barnhouse was charged with the loss, dropping his season record to 1-2.
Khalil Walker led New Mexico’s offense by going 3-for-5 with two RBIs. Several other Lobos also had multiple hits: Anthony Diaz (2-for-5), Luke Mansy (2-for-5), Akili Carris (2-for-3), and Karsen Waslefsky (2-for-4). Damian Garcia hit his third home run of the year with a three-run shot that extended UNM’s lead earlier in the game. In the bottom of the ninth, Garcia narrowly missed tying the game with another home run that was ruled foul after review.
Lenny Junior Ashby contributed one hit, one RBI, and drew two walks for New Mexico.
Looking ahead, Ryan Castillo is scheduled to start Game One of Saturday’s doubleheader for New Mexico, while Diego Alvarez will pitch Game Two. All games in this four-game series can be streamed on the MW Network at GoLobos.com/Watch with live stats available at GoLobos.com/BSBStats.
