Rep. Melanie Stansbury, who represents New Mexico’s 1st district in the U.S. Congress, used her social media platform on March 29, 2026, to honor veterans and highlight her engagement with students visiting Washington, D.C.

In a post recognizing Vietnam War Veterans Day, Stansbury stated: “Today and every day, we honor the courage and service of our Vietnam Veterans. On Vietnam War Veterans Day, we recognize the men and women who answered the call and continue to lead. We thank you and we will never forget your service.” (March 29, 2026).

Later that evening, she reflected on meeting students at a national landmark: “Every year students from all over the country come to visit DC. Yesterday, I met some amazing math and science students visiting the Lincoln Memorial and we talked STEM, what it’s like to visit DC, and the path to service. This is what it’s all about! These are our future” (March 29, 2026).

Stansbury also paid tribute to Lieutenant James Flowers for his military service: “Lieutenant James Flowers is an American hero.  From his deployment with the Tuskegee Airmen in World War II to his time as a school teacher, he has lived a life of patriotism and service. Thank you for your service to this country, Lt. Flowers! “ (March 29, 2026).

Melanie Stansbury began serving in Congress in 2021 after replacing Deb Haaland as representative for New Mexico’s 1st district. She previously served in the New Mexico House of Representatives from 2019 to 2021. Born in Farmington in 1979 and now residing in Albuquerque at age 44, Stansbury has won multiple elections since taking federal office—defeating Mark Moores in a special election in 2021 with over sixty percent of the vote; Michelle Garcia Holmes in 2022; and Steve Jones in the most recent general election held in 2024.
