U.S. Representative Melanie Stansbury, who represents New Mexico’s 1st district in Congress, used her Twitter account on May 17, 2026, to highlight recent efforts focused on voting rights and government transparency.
In a post made early that morning, Stansbury described her participation in events in Alabama: “Truly an amazing and inspiring day in Selma and Montgomery – organizing and mobilizing for the fight ahead to protect voting rights and win back our democracy!” (May 17, 2026).
Later that day, she addressed ongoing efforts related to the Epstein discharge petition: “Just four Republicans joined us in signing the Epstein discharge petition to release the files. Today, the White House and DOJ are still obstructing the law. Of those four Republicans: one left Congress after reported threats from the President and his supporters. One is being” (May 17, 2026).
On the anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education, Stansbury reflected on her activities over the weekend: “Today on the anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education, I am heading out from Birmingham, AL after a truly inspiring weekend mobilizing and organizing to defend voting rights. History teaches us that the struggle for justice continues as a continuous line across our nation’s” (May 17, 2026).
Melanie Stansbury has served as U.S. Representative for New Mexico’s 1st District since replacing Deb Haaland in 2021. She previously held office in the New Mexico House of Representatives from 2019 to 2021. Born in Farmington, New Mexico in 1979, Stansbury resides in Albuquerque.
Stansbury has won multiple elections since entering federal office—defeating Mark Moores in a special election with over sixty percent of votes cast in June 2021; winning reelection against Michelle Garcia Holmes with nearly fifty-six percent of votes cast in November 2022; and again prevailing over Steve Jones with just over fifty-six percent support during the most recent general election.
