U.S. Representative Melanie Stansbury, a Democratic lawmaker who has won multiple elections since 2021, used her social media platform on October 1, 2025, to address concerns about an impending government shutdown and its impact on federal workers and public programs.

In a post at midnight, Stansbury stated: “Fighting to protect our federal workers “ (October 1, 2025). Later that night, she provided an update on the ongoing budget negotiations in Congress: “We are definitely headed for a government shutdown tonight. Here’s why. https://t.co/OZ25NkuV2z” (October 1, 2025).

As the deadline approached without resolution, Stansbury criticized Republican lawmakers and former President Donald Trump for their role in the stalemate. She wrote: “Tonight, it is clear that Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress would rather shut down the government than fund vital programs and address the looming healthcare crisis that will affect tens of millions of Americans.” (October 1, 2025).

Melanie Stansbury has represented her district through several election cycles. In the most recent contest in 2024, she defeated Steve Jones with 56.4% of the vote. Previously, she won against Michelle Garcia Holmes in 2022 with 55.8%, and Mark Moores in a special election in 2021 with over 60% support.

The current standoff in Congress reflects ongoing partisan disagreements over funding priorities as deadlines approach each fiscal year.
