U.S. Representative Melanie Stansbury, a Democratic congresswoman from New Mexico, has taken to social media to address the ongoing shutdown of the House of Representatives and to communicate with constituents about the situation in Washington, D.C.

On October 7, 2025, Stansbury announced an upcoming online event to answer questions related to the shutdown. She wrote, “I’m holding a virtual Town Hall TOMORROW at 5:30 pm MT to answer all of your shutdown questions, and give you the latest on what’s happening in D.C. I’ll be streaming on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter. Join me!”

Later that day, Stansbury described the state of the House chamber. She stated, “It’s Tuesday afternoon, around 4 pm – and there is literally no one here in the House of Representatives. Not a soul on what should be a busy day. And, why? Because the GOP has shut it down. Literally.”

On October 8, 2025, Stansbury continued her commentary by highlighting the actions of her Democratic colleagues. She posted, “From every corner of the country, Dems showed up for work—traveling long days to do our jobs, to reopen the government, to save healthcare, to support our communities, and to save our democracy. Because, that is what we do. But, where are our GOP colleagues? Nowhere to be found.”

Stansbury has served as the U.S. Representative for New Mexico since winning a special election in 2021 and securing re-election in subsequent cycles. In 2024, she defeated Steve Jones with 56.4% of the vote. She previously won against Michelle Garcia Holmes in 2022 and Mark Moores in 2021.

Her recent statements come amid broader tensions in Congress regarding government funding and legislative activity.
