Representative Melanie Stansbury, a U.S. Congresswoman from New Mexico, posted a series of messages on her social media account addressing the ongoing federal government shutdown and its impacts on her constituents.
On October 1, 2025, Stansbury wrote, “Friends, it’s Wednesday afternoon—and the government is shut down. Workers furloughed. Offices closed. Healthcare in the balance. And threats of mass firings. Meanwhile, our House Republican colleagues are nowhere to be found. And, we know this shutdown is going to impact”.
Later that day, she added in another post dated October 2, 2025: “We know this shutdown is scary! New Mexico is a split screen right now. While national Republicans have shut down the government and healthcare for millions, Democrats in New Mexico are leading the way with a Special Session to fix healthcare, food assistance, and to protect our”.
In a third message on October 2, 2025, Stansbury invited residents to engage directly with her: “Worried about the shutdown? Concerned about what’s happening at the federal level? Need help? Or just want to say hi? I’ll be home Friday for a Community Town Hall at 4:00 pm MT at the Albuquerque Convention Center to talk about what is happening and answer any questions you”.
Stansbury has represented New Mexico in Congress since winning her seat in a special election in 2021 against Mark Moores. She secured reelection victories in subsequent general elections against Michelle Garcia Holmes in 2022 and Steve Jones in 2024.
The current government shutdown referenced by Stansbury has resulted in furloughs for federal workers and interruptions to various public services. The Congresswoman’s comments highlight both the local legislative response within New Mexico and concerns regarding national political divisions over federal funding.
