On January 4, 2026, Mayor Timothy M. Keller and five Albuquerque City Council members were sworn in at the Albuquerque Convention Center. The event marked the start of the city’s 27th City Council session, which now features a female majority with six women among its nine members. Nearly 1,000 residents, community leaders, and officials attended the ceremony.
The inauguration represented two notable milestones for Albuquerque’s government. Mayor Keller was sworn in for a third consecutive term, making him the first mayor to do so in city history. Stephanie Telles joined as District 1 Councilor for her first term, expanding the council’s female majority.
In addition to Mayor Keller and Councilor Telles, Klarissa J. Peña (District 3) and Dan Lewis (District 5) each began their fourth terms; Tammy Fiebelkorn (District 7) and Renée Grout (District 9) started their second terms.
During the event, officials discussed their commitments to addressing public safety, housing needs, and economic development challenges facing Albuquerque.
Albuquerque’s City Council has responsibilities including establishing goals for city governance, approving budgets, maintaining a merit system for employees, adopting policies consistent with its chartered goals as described on its official website, and annually electing council leadership according to council history. The city is divided into nine geographic districts for council representation as outlined on its official site.
The newly inaugurated council is scheduled to hold its first regular meeting of the year on Monday, January 5 at 5:00 p.m. in the Vincent E. Griego Chambers.
