A lightning strike at the Bernalillo County Emergency Communications Center on Tuesday afternoon caused intermittent power surges that disrupted 9-1-1 dispatch operations. Due to the incident, some emergency calls are being temporarily rerouted to the Albuquerque Police Department.

Maintenance teams were sent to the site immediately and are working to resolve the problem. Residents are advised to continue calling 9-1-1 for emergencies as usual.

According to a recent report, the District Attorney of Bernalillo County has expressed frustration over suspects being released without GPS monitors when they are required to have them. In one example, Jawid Yaqubi was accused of threatening his family with a firearm in Albuquerque and firing a shot over his mother’s head. The district attorney’s office tried to keep him in custody until trial after he was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, but he was released by a judge.
