Despite life-saving efforts, an inmate at the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center died on Wednesday. The deceased was identified as Thomas Acee, aged 21, who had been booked into the facility on December 6, 2024.

Acee was found unresponsive at approximately 4:27 a.m. Staff from MDC and the UNM Hospital medical team responded promptly and began life-saving measures. Despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead at 4:48 a.m. His next of kin has been informed.

A preliminary investigation suggests that MDC staff acted according to established policy. The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office was notified and arrived at the scene. In line with standard procedure, both the MDC Office of Professional Standards and BCSO are investigating the incident.

The New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator will determine the official cause of death.
