The City of Albuquerque has announced a new benefit for its employees called the “Employee Pet Care Membership.” This program is a voluntary option that provides staff with access to services such as spay and neuter procedures, vaccinations, and annual wellness exams for their pets. The membership dues will be used to support the City’s HEART fund, which aims to expand preventive pet care services for residents across Albuquerque.
This initiative is managed by the Animal Welfare Department (AWD) and is described as the first known program of its kind offered by a city-run animal shelter in the United States. The program begins on September 1 and is available only to current City of Albuquerque employees who commit to a one-year membership term running from September 1 through August 31 each year.
Mayor Tim Keller said, “Albuquerque always leads with heart. With the launch of Pet Care Membership, we’re making sure our employees and their animals are taken care of. It’s a win for our workforce, for pets, and for the values we stand by as a city.”
Deputy Director of Human Resources Todd McDowell added, “Employers often provide medical benefits to families, but the City recognizes that pets are part of the family too. By offering this voluntary membership, Albuquerque becomes a leader in redefining what benefits can mean for today’s workforce.”
AWD Director Carolyn Ortega stated, “This program truly puts the HEART ordinance into action. It reflects our mission to promote responsible pet ownership, expand access to care, and support the well-being of animals citywide by starting with the pets in our own City family.”
The membership not only offers convenience for employees but also helps finance services for low- and moderate-income pet owners throughout Albuquerque. More information about applying for preventive pet-care services is available online.
