The City of Albuquerque has announced the expansion of free and low-cost programs aimed at providing adults with greater access to education, job training, wellness resources, and social services. The effort is part of the recently launched Affordable ABQ initiative led by Mayor Tim Keller.
Affordable ABQ seeks to bring together various city resources for education, childcare, food, housing, and transportation under one platform. The program’s goal is to make it easier for residents to find and use these resources in order to help families manage daily expenses and improve stability.
“Albuquerque is committed to making opportunity affordable and accessible to every resident,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “Whether it’s earning a GED, learning a new language, starting a business, or maintaining a healthy lifestyle, these programs break down barriers and help our community thrive.”
Through collaborations with local libraries, community centers, and workforce organizations, residents can participate in free GED classes at public libraries as well as language courses and educational workshops at community centers. Additional offerings include job training and mentorship programs targeting both teens and adults.
The initiative also includes access to gymnasiums and recreation facilities at no cost through community centers. Seniors aged 50 and older are eligible for free meals provided at senior and community centers.
For those seeking business or employment support, the City provides workforce development resources alongside small business development assistance. Financial literacy programs are available through Bank on Burque while redevelopment efforts continue via the Metropolitan Redevelopment Agency.
Residents facing challenges related to housing or basic needs can utilize eviction prevention measures, emergency rental and utility aid programs, diaper assistance services, clothing banks, as well as other community-based supports designed to help families stay connected.
With Affordable ABQ underway along with new legislation focused on improving food access in the city, officials say they remain dedicated to enhancing affordability, equity, and resilience within Albuquerque communities.
