A candlelight vigil will be held at Civic Plaza in Bernalillo County on Saturday, August 16, at 7 p.m. The event is organized by the Keep NM Alive campaign and is intended to honor lives lost too soon while providing a space for remembrance and healing.
The vigil is open to the public and free of charge. Free parking will be available after 6 p.m. at downtown meters and in the Civic Plaza underground garage. Community advocates, service providers, survivors, therapy animals, and refreshment trucks will be present at the event.
Attendees are encouraged to bring a framed photo (8×10 or smaller) of loved ones who have passed away. These photos can be placed on the steps leading to the stage as part of a collective tribute.
“Recovery is only possible when we feel connected, seen, and supported,” says BernCo Vice Chair Adriann Barboa (D3). “This vigil reminds us that healing happens in community, and that no one should face grief, substance use, or recovery alone.”
Organizers note that while there has been progress in reducing fentanyl-related deaths in New Mexico, substance use continues to affect families throughout the state. According to recent reports, issues such as suspects violating GPS monitor rules remain a concern for law enforcement officials in Bernalillo County.
“As we honor the lives lost to this devastating epidemic, we also recognize the progress our community has made in breaking down stigma, expanding access to treatment, and creating pathways to long-term recovery,” says Albuquerque Health, Housing and Homelessness Director Gilbert Ramirez. “As a community, it’s crucial we continue walking in step, united in our mission to save lives.”
“Keep NM Alive has grown into more than a campaign—it’s a movement,” says Lisa Sedillo White, Deputy County Manager for General Services. “We are united in our commitment to ending discrimination against anyone with a behavioral health condition, expanding support, and honoring the lives we’ve lost by lifting up those still fighting.”
