Bernalillo County will hold a candlelight vigil on Saturday, August 16, to honor lives lost and support families, survivors, and community members affected by substance use. The event is organized in partnership with the Keep NM Alive campaign and aims to bring together residents, recovery advocates, behavioral health providers, clergy, and local leaders for an evening focused on remembrance and unity. The vigil is free and open to the public.
Participants are encouraged to bring framed photos of loved ones, with 8 x 10 frames preferred. The event will take place at Civic Plaza in downtown Albuquerque at 7 p.m.
This year’s vigil comes amid both progress and ongoing challenges related to substance use in New Mexico. Fentanyl-related deaths have started to decline; however, alcohol and other substances continue to impact families across the state. The gathering seeks to provide a space for reflection, mourning, and renewed commitment to prevention efforts.
“This vigil reminds us of the lives we’ve lost too soon, the strength of those who carry on, and the hope that drives our community forward,” said Vice Chair Adriann Barboa (D3).
The issue of substance abuse has intersected with concerns about public safety in Bernalillo County. Recently, the District Attorney expressed frustration over suspects violating ankle monitor rules but being released back onto the streets without GPS monitoring when required by court orders.
