Residents in Bernalillo County will soon need to use different methods to pay their property taxes. The Treasurer’s Office has announced that the five turquoise drop boxes currently located throughout the county will be removed starting in September. These boxes are at Civic Plaza, Paradise Hills Community Center, West Side Community Center, Raymond G. Sanchez Community Center, and the Village of Tijeras Office.

According to county officials, the removal is due to improved payment options now available for taxpayers. The decision also comes after incidents where needles, sticky substances, and other objects were found inside the boxes as part of attempts to steal tax payments.

The Fleet and Facilities Department will begin removing the drop boxes next month, with all removals expected to be complete by October 1.

Bernalillo County residents can still pay their property taxes through several other methods. Property tax bills are mailed by November 1 each year. The first installment is due on November 10 and becomes delinquent after December 10. The second installment is due April 10 and becomes delinquent after May 10.
