Bernalillo County Parks, Recreation and Open Space is inviting residents to participate in a public meeting on Thursday, August 14, to discuss the future of Sedillo Ridge Open Space. The event will be held at the Sandia Ranger Station at 11776 N.M. Highway 337 in Tijeras, with sign-in beginning at 5:30 p.m. and the meeting starting at 6 p.m.
Sedillo Ridge Open Space covers about 600 acres and represents more than half of Bernalillo County’s open space system. The county first acquired part of the property in the early 2000s to prevent development. Since then, additional land has been added, including a recent purchase of 50 acres on the southern edge in May 2025 for potential site-specific improvements.
Work such as vegetation thinning has already started on this property to reduce fire risk and improve access for future visitors. This session marks the fourth community meeting as part of a master planning process that aims to create a long-term plan for upgrades over the next five years.
Planning boards at the meeting will display proposals for new trails, connections to nearby public lands, parking areas, roadway access points, ecological restoration efforts, and facilities intended for future programming. County staff will be available to answer questions and collect feedback from attendees.

In related county matters, there have been concerns raised by the District Attorney of Bernalillo County regarding suspects violating GPS monitor rules and being released without proper monitoring. In one instance highlighted by local media, Jawid Yaqubi was accused of aggravated assault involving firearms but was released despite objections from prosecutors.
