Bernalillo County is urging local residents, organizations, businesses, schools, and service providers to participate in the nationwide 988 Day of Action on Monday, September 8. The event aims to raise awareness about the 988 Lifeline, a free and confidential support service that operates around the clock.
The 988 Lifeline allows people to call, text, or chat with trained counselors for support if they are feeling overwhelmed, anxious, dealing with substance use issues, or facing other life challenges. This year’s theme is “Compassionate Help. Anytime. Anywhere.” The county notes that help is always available through this three-digit number.
To assist with participation in 988 Day of Action, Bernalillo County has provided a selection of sample graphics for use on social media platforms and newsletters. Additional materials can be found in the online toolkit at 988lifeline.org/988-day.
The county will also be sharing information about 988 Day through its own communications channels and encourages community involvement.
This initiative comes as concerns continue within Bernalillo County about public safety and mental health resources. For example, the District Attorney has expressed frustration over suspects being released without GPS monitors despite court orders requiring them. In one recent case cited by local news outlets, Jawid Yaqubi was accused of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after reportedly firing a gun at family members in Albuquerque; despite efforts from the DA’s office to keep him in custody until trial, he was released by a judge.
