Bernalillo County formally introduced Zachary Lardy as the new fire chief of Bernalillo County Fire Rescue (BCFR) to the Board of County Commissioners. Lardy, who has served more than 19 years with BCFR and spent five years as deputy chief, will begin his role on September 10.
“Chief Lardy brings a deep understanding of this department and a proven commitment to his community,” said County Manager Cindy Chavez. “We are confident that under his leadership Bernalillo County Fire Rescue will continue to grow stronger.”
Lardy will oversee more than 300 personnel across 14 districts. His responsibilities include managing operations, training, budgeting, emergency preparedness, interagency coordination, and compliance.
“As a third-generation firefighter, I’m honored to continue my career in public service in my home community as Bernalillo County’s next fire chief. I’m grateful for Chief Perez and those before me who laid the foundation of excellence for Bernalillo County Fire Rescue,” said Fire Chief Zachary Lardy.
Outgoing Fire Chief Greg Perez announced his departure from the department in February but will remain with the county as deputy county manager of the Public Safety Division.
The appointment comes at a time when public safety remains an important issue in Bernalillo County. For example, concerns have been raised about suspects violating GPS monitoring requirements while awaiting trial. The District Attorney’s office has expressed frustration over cases where individuals accused of violent crimes have been released despite these violations. One such case involved Jawid Yaqubi, who was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon but was released by a judge after prosecutors sought to keep him in custody (https://www.krqe.com/news/crime/bernalillo-county-da-frustrated-over-suspects-breaking-ankle-monitor-rules/).
