The Bernalillo County Board of Commissioners has formally recognized a group of lifeguards for their actions in saving a young swimmer at the South Valley Aquatic Center on June 23. The board honored the team during its recent meeting, highlighting their coordinated response and professionalism.
According to county officials, lifeguard Logan Sanchez was first to respond by entering the water and recovering the unresponsive child. Pool manager Melannie Hernandez activated emergency protocols and led the team’s efforts. Head guards Edgar Pavia Garcia and Anthony Montoya, along with lifeguards Joshua Lovato and Japhet Beltran Larios, performed three rounds of CPR and other life-saving measures until the child regained consciousness.
Other aquatics staff members—Sophia Martinez, Ian Toledo, Lucas Toledo, and Xavier Olivares—were also recognized for their preparedness during the incident.
Many of these lifeguards are pursuing careers in healthcare, emergency response, skilled trades, or community leadership. Their experience with Bernalillo County’s Aquatics Program ranges from one to seven years.
County officials said this incident demonstrates the important role that trained aquatic staff play in public safety. They emphasized ongoing investment in training and support for lifeguards throughout Bernalillo County.
