Bernalillo County Commissioner Walt Benson is supporting the Voice of Democracy audio essay competition, which is organized by Veterans of Foreign War (VFW) Post 10763. The competition is open to high school students in grades 9-12 and encourages them to write and record essays on the theme “How are You Showing Patriotism and Support for Our Country.”

The Voice of Democracy program, started in 1947, gives students an opportunity to share their thoughts on democracy and patriotism. According to the program, nearly 40,000 students from across the United States participate each year. The contest offers $2.1 million in scholarships and incentives.

The national first-place winner will receive a $35,000 scholarship paid directly to the American university, college, or vocational/technical school of their choice. Other national scholarships range from $1,000 to $15,000. Each state’s first-place winner will receive at least a $1,000 scholarship and an all-expense paid trip to Valley Forge.

The competition is open to students in public, private, parochial, or home study programs in the United States and its territories. Students must submit their essay in both written and audio formats to VFW Post 10763. The entry application and rules are available at https://www.vfw.org under Youth Services application.

Jim Berdine, a member of VFW Post 10763, can provide more information at 505-350-3004. The deadline for submissions is October 31, 2025.

Meanwhile, the District Attorney of Bernalillo County has expressed concern about suspects violating GPS monitor rules and being released despite serious charges, such as aggravated assault.
