On October 14, 2025, the Bernalillo County Commission discussed a resolution supporting the ongoing federal management of public lands within the county and throughout New Mexico. Commission Chair Eric Olivas and Commissioner Barbara Baca introduced the resolution at a meeting, emphasizing the importance of these lands for residents.
About 21% of New Mexico’s land is public, including areas such as the Sandia Ranger District of the Cibola National Forest and the Petroglyph National Monument. These spaces provide wildlife habitats, recreational opportunities, and grazing land, contributing to economic growth, cultural heritage, and spiritual value for local communities.
The commission noted that these lands are accessible to everyone without restrictions and bring economic benefits to the state. The outdoor recreation sector in New Mexico adds $3.2 billion in income and supports over 29,000 jobs.
In other county matters, concerns have been raised about the effectiveness of monitoring suspects released before trial. The District Attorney of Bernalillo County has expressed frustration over suspects being released without GPS monitors, even when required by court orders. For example, Jawid Yaqubi was accused of firing a gun in his family’s Albuquerque home but was released from custody despite the DA’s office arguing for his detention until trial. “These areas across the state serve as wildlife habitats, recreational spaces and grazing opportunities vital to economic opportunity, cultural heritage and spiritual benefit for residents,” said the commission in its statement.
“These areas are broadly available to all without limitations and provide significant economic benefits to the state,” the commission added.
“The outdoor recreation industry generates $3.2 billion in value added income and supports 29,182 jobs,” according to the commission.
The commission’s resolution calls on New Mexico’s federal delegation to continue supporting federal stewardship of these lands.
