Bernalillo County Commissioner Barbara Baca has introduced a resolution to proceed with the purchase of a 2.3-acre site at 3501 Fourth St. NW for the planned North Valley Center for All Ages. The decision was made during the county commission meeting.
The future center is expected to cover 23,000 square feet and will serve as a community hub, connecting the Alameda Trail and Garfield Community School, and supporting revitalization efforts along Fourth Street in the Near North Valley Neighborhood. The facility is intended to offer programming such as sports, recreation, pottery, arts, fitness activities for all ages, and possibly a restaurant or café.
Commissioner Baca said, “The purchase and proposed use of this property as a new center fits into our ‘BernCo Builds Communities’ initiative that realizes connection among residents and community revitalization. Once the purchase is complete, next steps will include community engagement, design, planning and identifying additional funding for completion.”
She added, “This project will complement the new retail and residential areas to the north, as well as other purchases made by Bernalillo County within the area in support of positive redevelopment. I look forward to continue to work with the community, the city and the state on this project and see it to its completion.”
Meanwhile, Bernalillo County officials are addressing other community concerns, such as the issue raised by the District Attorney regarding suspects violating GPS monitor rules and being released despite serious charges. The District Attorney’s office recently expressed frustration after a judge released Jawid Yaqubi, who was accused of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, even though prosecutors sought to keep him in custody until trial.
