The Bernalillo County Board of Commissioners approved a resolution at its meeting on September 23, 2025, outlining several policy priorities for the upcoming New Mexico Special Legislative Session scheduled to begin October 1.
The resolution calls on state lawmakers and Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham to take immediate steps through the state’s Health Care Authority to secure funding and maintain healthcare services currently provided by Medicaid. These services support tens of thousands of New Mexicans, including children.
Additionally, the resolution urges the state to act quickly to prevent or offset any loss of essential food programs such as SNAP benefits. It also highlights concerns about maintaining public broadcasting and federal transportation funding.
These policy priorities come as local officials address ongoing issues in the county. For example, the District Attorney of Bernalillo County has recently expressed frustration over suspects being released without GPS monitors despite court orders. One case involved a suspect accused of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon who was released by a judge even after efforts from the DA’s office to keep him in custody until trial.
