Bernalillo County is set to begin a pavement preservation project on Fourth Street NW in Albuquerque’s North Valley starting August 25. The work will involve removing the top layer of old asphalt and replacing it with a new surface from Alameda to where Fourth Street meets Second Street. According to county officials, there will be no changes to the existing road layout.
The construction will start at Alameda and proceed northbound, with an estimated completion date in mid-November. Work will pause during Balloon Fiesta to minimize disruptions for local traffic.
The county states that the project aims to extend the lifespan of the roadway, improve drivability, and provide a smoother surface for travelers.

Separately, recent concerns have been raised regarding public safety in Bernalillo County. The District Attorney has expressed frustration over suspects violating GPS ankle monitor rules and returning to the streets when they are supposed to remain under monitoring. In one case, Jawid Yaqubi was accused of pulling a gun on his sister and firing a shot near his mother at their Albuquerque home. Despite efforts by the DA’s office to keep him in custody pending trial on aggravated assault charges, he was released by a judge (https://www.krqe.com/news/crime/bernalillo-county-da-frustrated-over-suspects-breaking-ankle-monitor-rules/).
