The Animal Welfare Department (AWD) in Albuquerque is seeking volunteers to join its dog walking team. The department emphasizes the important role dog walkers play in improving the lives of shelter dogs by providing exercise, socialization, mental stimulation, and teaching leash etiquette. These activities are seen as vital for the well-being of the animals and can increase their chances of adoption.
“AWD needs volunteers who want to donate their time to help our four-legged friends,” said Animal Welfare Department Director Carolyn Ortega. “Whether you can spare a few hours a week, a few hours a month, or you want to open your home to animals who are struggling in the shelter, there is a place for you on our volunteer team.”
The department offers a training program designed to give volunteers essential knowledge about dog behavior, handling techniques, and safe practices. This training aims to benefit both the volunteers and the dogs under their care.
Opportunities for volunteering include group walks at the westside shelter on Wednesdays and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., as well as at the eastside shelter on Saturdays during the same hours. Individual walks can also be scheduled daily at both shelters according to each volunteer’s availability.
To participate or obtain more information, interested individuals are encouraged to email AWD with their contact details. Staff will follow up with an online application process for joining the volunteer team.
“This is a chance for the community to step in and help a shelter pet,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “Volunteering can be very rewarding, knowing you’re making a real difference in the lives of these animals and their future families.”
The initiative invites community members not only to support local animals but also potentially find new companions themselves.
