The City of Albuquerque’s Department of Youth & Family Services has announced a series of winter break programs and community events aimed at supporting families during the holiday season. These offerings include all-day youth programs, festive activities, and opportunities for residents to give back.
“While the holidays are a joyful time, they can also be challenging for working families,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “Our goal is to make sure kids have a safe, fun place to be while parents work, and to provide resources that bring comfort and joy to families across the city.”
Registration for winter break programs opens December 8 at 8 a.m. The programs are available for children in kindergarten through eighth grade and will run from December 22 through January 5 at local community centers. Activities include on-site holiday-themed events, off-site field trips, and free daily lunches.
Teens aged 12-17 can access free amenities such as computer labs, game rooms, gymnasiums, and classes at community centers with membership passes available online. Fitness rooms are open to those 16 years and older; teens aged 14-15 may use them with parental supervision.
Several holiday events are scheduled across Albuquerque. On December 20, the Coats & Cocoa Christmas Parade will take place from noon to 2 p.m. at Thomas Bell Community Center, featuring coat distribution for youth under 18, food, a parade, and other community resources. The Mesa Verde Community Center will host A Grinchmas Celebration on December 14 from 4:30 to 8 p.m., offering music by the Albuquerque Youth Symphony and toy giveaways. Additionally, an Inclusion Recreation Holiday Dance celebrating its 50th anniversary is set for December 11 from 7–10 p.m., welcoming people of all abilities.
Residents interested in giving back can participate in donation drives this season. The Crossing Guard Holiday Food Drive runs from December 8–12 at neighborhood elementary schools and community centers. The Mesa Verde Toy Drive is accepting new unwrapped toys until December 8 for distribution during the Grinchmas event.
