The City of Albuquerque has announced the launch of the Murals of Possibilities Grant, a program aimed at supporting property owners, businesses, and artists interested in creating public murals within the city’s Metropolitan Redevelopment Areas (MR Areas). The initiative provides up to $750 per project to help cover artist fees, design work, materials, and installation costs for new murals. Both interior and exterior murals are eligible as long as they remain accessible to the public.
Kaleena Madruga, Sol Housing Community Relations Manager, highlighted the importance of art in building community identity. “Murals are a wonderful way to uplift local artists and showcase the vibrancy, uniqueness, and warmth of our city and our communities,” said Madruga. “When residents, visitors, and pedestrians are welcomed by a mural, they feel a sense of connectedness and belonging. Each of Sol Housing’s properties have a distinctive identity. Incorporating art into these spaces further uplifts our vision of everyone creating community, connection, and joy in a home of their choice.”
Mayor Tim Keller emphasized how murals reflect Albuquerque’s character. “Murals tell the story of who we are and where we’re headed,” said Mayor Keller. “Every splash of color adds life to our streets and pride to our neighborhoods. The Murals of Possibilities grant supports property owners to be part of that story.”
The program allows residents and local artists significant input throughout the process—from artist selection to design decisions.
“Our role at the City is to help turn those visions into reality,” said MRA Director Terry Brunner. “We are aiming to close the financial gaps that can keep great ideas from taking shape.”
To support applicants through the process, a free informational webinar will take place on Friday, August 22, 2025 at noon Mountain Standard Time. The session will address eligibility requirements, application steps, and advice for preparing proposals.
Applications for funding are now being accepted. Additional details about eligibility criteria and redevelopment area boundaries can be found on the MRA website or by contacting Mara Salcido at [email protected].
