Fresh paint and new murals are expected to appear along Central Avenue as Albuquerque introduces the Fresh Coat: Property Improvement Grant. The program, managed by the Metropolitan Redevelopment Agency (MRA), aims to improve commercial properties in designated redevelopment areas on Central Avenue by providing funding for exterior painting and large-scale murals.
The initiative is intended to create more inviting streets, support small businesses, and highlight the history of Route 66 ahead of its centennial. According to city officials, enhancing the appearance of storefronts and adding public art can make business districts more appealing and walkable, potentially increasing foot traffic and contributing to a stronger sense of community.
“Central is a vital route through Albuquerque, and investing in it strengthens the communities that depend on it,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “Fresh Coat helps create places people want to walk, gather and support local businesses, while honoring the legacy of Route 66.”
The grant offers financial assistance ranging from $3,000 to $10,000 per property depending on the size of the building facade and project scope. Murals must be at least 400 square feet to qualify for funding. Work can be completed by individuals, contractors, volunteers or nonprofit organizations.
Properties eligible for funding must be located within one of several designated redevelopment areas along Central Avenue. Priority will be given to small businesses and projects that encourage further investment in these neighborhoods.
“Fresh Coat is a practical way to help businesses make visible improvements that benefit the corridor as a whole,” said MRA Director Terry Brunner. “With the Route 66 centennial approaching, these projects are a wonderful way to honor the history and character of this iconic roadway while supporting the neighborhoods along it.”
Eligible areas include Barelas; Central/Highland/Upper Nob Hill; Downtown; East Downtown; East Gateway; Historic Central; Near Heights; Soldiers & Sailors Park; Sycamore; University; and West Central.
Applications for the grant open on February 3, 2026, and close April 3, 2026. They will be reviewed as they are received and must be submitted online through the City’s application portal. Applicants can verify if their property is eligible using an online map provided by Albuquerque’s Metropolitan Redevelopment Areas program at Metropolitan Redevelopment Areas — City of Albuquerque.
